Waunakee EMS is a group of roughly 65 volunteers committed to serving the emergency medical needs of our community. Each member donates a minimum of 6 hours each week, plus twelve 12-hour weekend shifts each year. Our members are trained as drivers, EMT-Basics, and EMT-Intermediate Technicians, Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics and Nurses. Extra time donated by our members may involve training, presenting to classrooms and local organizations, staffing an extra ambulance for special events, and contributing time and efforts to many other events throughout the year such as our annual banquet and fundraiser picnic in the summer.
As a service, Waunakee Area EMS has grown immensely since our beginning in 1979. The number of members has increased from about 20 in 1979 to over 60 today! As the village and surrounding areas grow, so does the need for emergency medical services. The number of calls that Waunakee Area EMS receives reflects the growth in our community (click on the graphs to see them larger). In 2010, Waunakee Area EMS responded to 958 calls both in its own service area, and as mutual aid to other districts.
The service provided by Waunakee Area EMS has changed over time, and our needs reflect the growth in our community. We have 2 ambulances that are always ready to respond. We staff the primary ambulance, known as Rescue 24, full time: 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Our back-up ambulance, known as Rescue 26, is staffed by members that are near to the station and are able to respond whenever the additional help is needed. Many of our members that are in the out-lying communities are able and ready to help even when they are off-duty. The commitment of our members to the safety and well-being of our community extends beyond our on-duty time, and is reflected in the care that our patients receive.
If you may be interested in volunteering to drive or serve as an EMT for Waunakee Area EMS, please request an application from Jay at our service office (608) 849-7522 or stop Monday-Friday during daytime hours to talk to a crew member. We are currently looking for drivers and/or EMTs able to work Monday-Friday between the hours of 6am - 6pm. Residents of the Village of Waunakee are especially encouraged to apply.
